Poetry 101 Rehab: Magic

you are magic:
i am magic.

speaking quietly,
quickly
quaintly and hearing
you choke on the
words.

the words flow,
tapping at an
otherwise-silent
atmosphere. it’s like
watching rain
and
hallucinating sunlight over
the horizon.

hush:
watch me work
enchanting and agile.
elegant, it seems,
in its complexity.

(watch the world
around
you dissolve into something
that you barely
recognize)

see now,
the candles extinguishing
and something new
settling over the world.

(hear you so silent
awed at all of
this:
my disguise unfurled)

you don’t recognize
me now,
i can see it.
hear it in your
silent trepidation,
breathe in the
perfume
of it.
magic has that
effect.

still you don’t
recognize me  –
drunk on the
magic
still permeating the air –
but that’s okay.

(nor do i)
